Which one fits? It depends what they do with it

Scooters have one measurement. Electric rides have three, depending on whether they sit on it, stand on it, or drive it.

If they sit on it: balance bikes and dirt bikes

Measure their inside leg and match it to the seat height. Sit them on it: they should be comfortable and still get their feet to the ground. That is the whole test, and it matters more than the age on the box.

Only the two Evoca balance bikes have a seat that adjusts. Every dirt bike seat is fixed.

If they drive it: the karts

Measure from the back of the seat to the pedals. A kart has no seat height to match, so the question is whether their legs reach.

If they stand on it: scooters and hoverboards

Go on age and weight. There is nothing to sit on, so the limits are how much it carries and whether they can control it. Every age and weight limit is further down this page.

Before you buy

What electric actually changes

They go without being pushed. That is the appeal and it is also the thing to think about.

Every ride here has a top speed set at the factory, and several have two modes so you can start slow. The Ground Force Rad Rod goes further: a limiter switch a parent sets, 11.3km/h or 16km/h. Nothing here is a toy that runs away with them on day one.

They all need charging, and it takes longer than people expect. That is normal, and the times are further down this page.

And they are heavier than the non-electric version of the same thing. A dirt bike is not a balance bike with a motor bolted on. Worth knowing before it has to come up a flight of stairs.

The age is a starting point, not a rule. Plenty of parents buy the MX350 for a confident five or six year old even though it says 8+. If they can sit on it and touch the ground, it fits.

The thing to think about is not their birthday, it is whether they have ridden before, because the MX350 has a lot more power than the MX125 and that can feel like a lot on the first go.

The first electric one, and the easiest thing here to learn. There are no pedals. They push off with their feet, then twist the throttle and the motor takes over. No gears, nothing to kick, no technique to master.

And you do not have to switch the motor on straight away. Plenty of parents leave it off at first and let them use it as an ordinary balance bike, then turn it on once they are steady and used to the idea of the speed.

The E30 is where most three and four year olds start. The E40 is the same bike grown up: bigger wheels, more speed, and a seat that goes higher.

The motor drives the back wheel by chain, under a guard, so there is nothing exposed. Lithium battery rather than the heavier sealed lead acid on most ride-ons, so they stay light and keep their capacity.

Motorbike shape, electric motor, no petrol. Knobby tyres, a twist throttle and a hand brake, built for grass and dirt. They are not silent, but the sound is the chain turning rather than an engine, so it is a quiet electric whirr instead of a two-stroke.

The Madd Gear My 1st Mini is the one people miss. Same size as the MX125 with a lower seat, and more power: 160W against 100W, 16km/h against 13km/h. The smallest bike, not the slowest.

The MX650 is an adult machine. Ages 16 up, carries 99kg, dual disc brakes and suspension front and rear. It is not the next size up from an MX350, it is a different thing.

Sideways is the point. A proper seat, and a steering system built to let them spin and drift rather than stopping them. Some run slick rear wheels and some run dual inclined casters, and either way the back end is meant to let go.

The Crazy Cart XL and the Evoca E-Drift Kart are the bulky ones and travel by truck freight. The XL arrives on a pallet and takes two people to lift. Some rural addresses cannot be delivered to, so talk to us first if you are rural.

UL 2272 certified, which is the electrical safety standard for hoverboards, so you are not gambling on the battery. A Cart Accessory is available that turns the board into a seated go-kart.

Out of the box

Charging, and how long the build takes

Almost all of these are a very quick set up, and every one comes with the manual and the tools you need in the box. The hoverboard needs no assembly at all.

The one exception is the Evoca E-Drift Kart. Allow 40 minutes to an hour for that one. Worth knowing if it is a birthday present and you were planning to build it the night before.

Charge it fully before the first ride, and it takes longer than you think.

Charge with the power switch off, and do not stop when the light goes green. The battery needs the full time to balance itself. Stopping early leaves a safety cut-off engaged and the ride will not turn on at all. If it is being stored, top it up once a month.

Questions we get asked

The things people ask before they buy

How do I know what size to get?

It depends on the type. If they sit on it, measure their inside leg against the seat height and check they can touch the ground. If it is a kart, measure from the back of the seat to the pedals. If they stand on it, go on age and weight. The measurements for every model are further up this page.

They are between two ages. Do I size up?

Usually yes, if they can still reach the ground or the pedals. The one to think twice about is jumping to a much more powerful bike for a first time rider. The MX350 has more than twice the power of the MX125, and that can feel like a lot on the first go.

How fast do they go, and can I slow it down?

Speeds run from 6km/h on the smallest balance bike to 27km/h on the adult dirt bike. The Evoca E30 and E40, the Madd Gear My 1st Mini and the Razor MX125 all have two speed modes so you can keep it slow while they learn, and the Ground Force Rad Rod has a limiter switch a parent sets.

How long does it run for, and how long to charge?

Most run 35 to 45 minutes of continuous use, and charging is 8 hours for Razor, 6 for Evoca, and 12 to 24 for the first charge on Madd Gear. Charge with the power switch off, and give it the full time even if the light turns green early.

Real-world range and run time vary. In high speed mode, on hills or soft and uneven ground, in cold weather, or with a heavier rider, the motor and battery work harder and draw more power, so you will get a shorter run per charge.

How much building is there?

Very little on most of them, and the manual and the tools are both in the box.

Dirt bikes: the handlebars and the front wheel, and that is about it. Carts: pop the flag in. Electric scooters: put the handlebar in and tighten the clamp. Hoverboards: nothing at all.

The one to plan for is the Evoca E-Drift Kart, which takes 40 minutes to an hour. Worth knowing if it is a birthday present and you were going to build it the night before.

Can they ride it on the road or the footpath?

These are designed for use around private property. If you want to use one somewhere else, check with your local authority, as the rules vary by region.

Is it heavy?

Heavier than the non-electric version of the same thing, because of the battery. The hoverboard is 6kg. The karts are genuinely bulky, and the Crazy Cart XL arrives on a pallet.
