What each one actually does

There is no single measurement on this page. Every other guide we have sizes a range on one thing. This one cannot, because these six have nothing in common except that they are all unusual.

So the question is not what size. It is what do you want it to do.

Want to ride without ever pushing? The RipStik or the RipSurf.
Want to drift and spin? The RipRider 360.
Want a kick scooter with a big air-filled front wheel? The Dino Glide.
Want to go up rather than along? The pogo stick.

Two things are true of all six. None of them has a motor, so everything here moves because the rider does. And every one wants the same thing underfoot: smooth, flat and dry. A driveway, a court or a quiet path.

Why they feel strange

The caster wheel, and why it changes everything

A caster is a wheel mounted at an angle so it can swivel. Put two of them on something and it stops behaving like it should.

On the RipStik and the RipSurf that is the whole machine. There is no pushing. You stand on a deck that twists in the middle, move your hips, and the board pulls itself forward. It is closer to snowboarding or surfing than to skating, which is why people who cannot skate often pick it up faster.

On the RipRider 360 it is a modification. It is a pedal trike, so a child already knows what to do with it, and then the back end lets go and spins. On the Dino Glide it is just fun, on an otherwise ordinary kick scooter.

The original caster board, and still the strangest thing to learn. Two decks joined by a pivot, on 360 degree inclined casters. You do not push off the ground at all. You twist, and it moves.

A surfboard for dry land, and it is not a figure of speech. Two high-performance caster wheels and a board shaped like a surfboard, so it carves and cuts the way one does on a wave. Designed in Southern California.

The hardest one on this page to learn, and the most rewarding. The RipStik has two separate foot plates and is ridden like a skateboard. The RipSurf is one board, shaped like a surfboard, and carves like one, so it is the closest you get to surfing without the water.

It has a big wheel and pedals, and that is where the similarity to a trike ends. Low to the ground, like the classic three-wheeler, with two inclined caster wheels on the back for resistance-free drifting and spinning.

A child already knows how to pedal, so there is nothing to learn before the fun starts. Then the back end goes.

The skate park, at your house. A practice rail that works for scooters, skateboards and rollerblades, with non-slip adjustable-height legs so it starts low and rises as they get better.

The names are the lengths, in inches. The Fifty5 is 55 inches, about 140cm. The Ninety9 is 99 inches, 251cm, and carries 100kg. There is also a 36 inch extension, about 91cm, which comes with a connector so it joins on to either one.

Questions we get asked

The things people ask before they buy

Which one is easiest to learn?

The RipRider 360, because a child already knows how to pedal. The hardest is the RipSurf. It is the closest thing there is to learning to surf without the water, and that is the point of it, but expect a few days rather than a few minutes.

Do you really never push on a RipStik?

No, you never do. The 360 degree inclined casters and the pivoting deck turn a twist of your hips into forward motion. It is the whole point of the design, and it is why it feels closer to snowboarding than skating.

What is the difference between the RipStik and the RipSurf?

Both are caster boards, both are 8 and up, and neither needs pushing. The RipStik is a board with two separate foot plates, ridden like a skateboard. The RipSurf is one board shaped like a surfboard, and carves like one. Same idea, very different feel.

What surface do they need?

Smooth, flat and dry. A driveway, a court or a quiet path. The caster boards in particular do not cope with loose gravel, and the pogo stick wants something solid.

What is a caster wheel?

A wheel mounted at an angle so it can swivel. On the RipStik and RipSurf that is what replaces pushing: twist, and the board pulls itself along. On the RipRider 360 it is what lets the back end drift.

Is there any assembly?

The RipSurf comes ready to ride, with a spare wheel and stickers in the box. The grind rails need putting together, and they come apart again to store.

How long is the warranty?

Two years on Madd Gear, the Dino Glide, the pogo stick and the grind rails. One year on Razor, the RipStik, RipSurf and RipRider 360.
