Which one fits? Ask what they want to do with it

Length is not the first question. What they want to do with it is. Two of our boards are both 31 inches and they are completely different machines. One is built to learn to skate on, the other to cover ground.

Learn to skate and try tricks: a double kicktail board. Both ends turn up, so it can pop, ollie and ride either way round.
Get places: a cruiser. Bigger softer wheels, one kicktail, built to roll over rough footpath.
Distance and smooth carving: a long board. Low, stable, and easy to push for a long way.

The kicktail is what decides how a board feels. Two kicks means tricks. One kick or none means cruising.

Before you buy

What the numbers on a skateboard actually mean

Five things get quoted on every board, and four of them matter.

Ply is how many layers of maple are in the deck. More ply is stiffer and stronger
Truck width: wider is more stable, narrower turns quicker
Wheel size: bigger wheels roll over rough ground better and carry speed further
ABEC is a bearing rating, and it matters far less than wheel size
Grip: every maple board has grip tape. The plastic Retro Board has its grip moulded in, so it cannot peel

50mm is a trick wheel. 70mm eats a bumpy footpath. That one number changes more than the ABEC rating ever will.

Small enough to carry everywhere, which is the whole point. A 7-ply maple double kicktail deck on composite trucks, with 50mm wheels and ABEC-5 bearings. Light enough for a school bag or a locker.

Both ends kick, so it is a real trick board rather than a toy.

22" Retro BoardThe plastic one

Ages 5 to 12 · up to 100kg · penny style, goes anywhere

The classic penny shape, and the toughest deck here. Hydro-wrapped plastic rather than maple, so it shrugs off wet grass and being dropped down a driveway.

The grip is moulded into the deck rather than taped on, so it never peels, and it is far kinder on knees and clothes than sandpaper grip tape. It is also less grippy than tape, which suits a cruiser rather than a trick board.

Bigger 62mm cruiser-compound wheels and ABEC-9 bearings, so it rolls further than its size suggests.

Wide, forgiving and quiet. A 7.5" wide 8-ply maple deck with a single kicktail, so there is proper room to stand and enough tail to hop a kerb.

62mm wheels on ABEC-7 bearings and 5" aluminium trucks, which is what makes it smooth over rough footpath rather than rattly.

31" LTRLearn to skate

Ages 5 to 12 · up to 100kg · the trick board. Also called a popsicle

LTR stands for Learn To Ride. In plain words, it is the board you learn to skate on. A 9-ply maple double kick concave deck, the stiffest board we sell, which is what you want underfoot while someone is finding their feet.

You will also hear this shape called a popsicle, after the deck outline. Same thing.

50 x 30mm wheels and ABEC-5 bearings on 5" heavy-duty composite trucks. Light enough for a younger rider to throw around.

31" Drop ThroughThe distance one

Ages 5 and up · up to 100kg · lowest deck, biggest wheels

Same length as the LTR and a completely different board. The trucks mount through the deck, so the deck sits lower than the wheels. That makes pushing easier and the whole thing steadier at speed.

Huge 70mm wheels on ABEC-7 bearings, the biggest here, so rough seal stops mattering. Better for getting somewhere than for tricks.

Questions we get asked

The things people ask before they buy

Which board should I get for a beginner?

If they want to learn to skate, the 31" LTR. Learn To Ride is the name on the box, and it is exactly that: a stiff 9-ply double kick deck and light trucks. If they are small or you want something they can carry, the 22" Locker Board does the same job in a smaller package.

What is the difference between the 31" LTR and the 31" Drop Through?

They are the same length and nothing else. The LTR has a kick at both ends and is built for tricks. The Drop Through mounts its trucks through the deck so it sits lower, with much bigger 70mm wheels, and is built to cover distance comfortably. Tricks on one, travel on the other.

Do they need assembling?

No. Every board arrives fully assembled and ready to ride.

Do you sell skateboard parts?

Our skateboards are sold as complete setups only, so we do not carry individual decks, trucks, wheels or bearings for them.

What does ABEC mean?

It is a precision rating for the bearings, and higher numbers spin a little more freely. It matters far less than wheel size. If you want a board that rolls well over rough ground, look at the wheels, not the ABEC number.

What is a popsicle board?

It is the shape of a classic street deck: symmetrical, with a kick at both ends, named after the deck outline. Our 31" LTR is a popsicle. If someone has been reading skate sites and asks for one, that is the board they mean.

What is a kicktail?

The turned-up end of the deck. Two kicktails means it can do tricks and ride either way round. One means it is built for cruising. It is the single thing that most changes how a board feels.

Is it too big or too small for them?

Go by what they want to do first. Within that, a shorter board is easier to carry and turn, a longer one is more stable and easier to push. The ages on each board are a guide, not a rule.

What surface can they ride on?

Smooth, flat and dry. Skateparks, and around home. Bigger wheels, like the 70mm on the Drop Through, handle rough seal far better than the 50mm trick wheels do.

How long is the warranty?

Two years. Every board here is Madd Gear.
